on tuesday, a few of us took a quick day trip up to highlands, north carolina. mostly we just wanted to go for a drive; before we knew it, we were headed north. we passed the time with my grandmother's stories of learning to jitterbug in the '50s and seeing the graduate in theaters in 1967, and sweet was the realization that, before she was my dad's mom, she was a young woman, the age i am now. once in highlands, we had po' boys for lunch and browsed antique shops in the afternoon, and a good rain shower made the blue ridge really serene for the ride back. this spontaneity thing pays off every time.
