30 September 2011

a postcard

from that little bookshop around the corner.

last weekend, an afternoon whiled away in that
dusty old bookshop i told you about the other month,
combing the creaky shelves, communing with the books, and
sifting for treasures. that little nook gets me every time.

happy, happy weekend! and
so long, september! you went wayyyyy too fast.

29 September 2011

thursday, thankful.

thankful to be back on my feet after a few
long days under the covers with toast and tea and christmas
movies (it sounds like vacation; it really wasn't).

soup after all. my sweet friends have overwhelmed me
with love over the past few days, showing up on my doorstep
with soup and fruit and magazines. as one said, "friends in
the city are family." we really are, aren't we?

and, as always, thankful for your sweet
emails and comments! i'm feeling much, much better.

happy thursday!

*post-edit: my 6 am self is looking pretty ambitious,
as my 9:57 am self is already back home. so here's
to tomorrow…

27 September 2011

today.

today i am in bed with aches and a throbbing
head cold (on the day i was supposed to get my flu shot, go
figure) and suddenly i am five years old again, only this time the
house is a tiny apartment, i'll make my own soup, and no one is
rubbing my back. funny how being sick can make you
miss home more than anything else.

so today, a few photos i've been meaning to share with you
for weeks now. they're from a stormy friday night on the high line,
that westside park with the elevated railroad tracks and interesting
flora. i love those old tracks and wildflowers. it's such
a curious space on the fringe of the city.

anyway, i'm off to make friends with orange
juice and sleep. see you tomorrow!

26 September 2011

the weekend.

it has meant so much to me to have some of
my family here for a girls' weekend over the past few days. we
visited farmer's + flea markets, tried turkish food, saw a stand up comedy show,
stayed up way too late, and just really made the most of their
few days in town. it was really wonderful. family time
 spoils me every time.

 i can't believe how quickly
that weekend went. september, too…we're already in
the last week! how is this happening???

23 September 2011

a postcard

from autumn in new york.

this was the week boots and tights moved to the front of my
closet, it was all of a sudden dark at 7 pm, and i marched into
bloomingdale's and bought my very first red lipstick. silly?
definitely. but i've always wanted to try it and i'm thinking that if
ever there was a time and place to rock mysterious red
autumn in new york is it.

happy weekend!

22 September 2011

breakfast at tiffany's.

because i like breakfast and endless-possibility-weekends and friends with great ideas. and getting up bright and early to admire the windows lining fifth avenue with pumpkin lattes and apple fritters. i don't love most touristy things, but i do love these windows, and if you are ever in new york, don't miss them. particularly at christmastime. that's when the real fun begins.

21 September 2011

the midweek farmer's market.

i am a big fan of little midweek indulgences over here, just a happy something here
and there to get my day going, to be sweet to a friend, or sometimes just because.

a joe latte on my way to work once or twice a week usually does it, but lately
i've found that even the farmer's market feels luxurious when seen from a weekday
rather than saturday afternoon-colored glasses. i need to do this more often.

20 September 2011

ferry boat to ikea.

a downside to city life is that trips to target and places like that turn into
major events…you can't just run down the street when you need something. an upside to city life is that trips to target and places like that turn into major events….you just plan your whole saturday around your ikea trip and you save lots of money while getting everything you need plus a little ferry boat ride with a pretty view.

ikea is a new york novelty to me. we didn't have one in south carolina and
i wouldn't have fully appreciated it even if we did. ikea makes it easy to organize your life into a <400 square foot studio. it also makes me ask myself questions like, do i need a wok?

it's the little things to get excited over, you know?
