o canada!

just a quick hello...

...from montreal!

my trip to london has taken a bit of a detour and i am actually considering it a stroke of good fortune. i think kerouac really got it right when he said that there is nowhere to go but everywhere and it looks to me like aircanada's bad planning has just helped me see a little more of the world in a little less time.

and who knows? maybe i will see you tomorrow from across the pond...you just never know with these things...

such a fun little saturday thanks to miss irene, with nowhere to go (except the corner store) and no way to get there anyhow. an invaluable reminder of how to just be.

the hurricane weekend.

with the exception of a flooded central park and a few trees on cars, irene was mostly a non-event, at least in my neighborhood. i know not everyone was so fortunate, and my prayers are with everyone trying to get back on track.

the city was eerily quiet with subways down and businesses closed, so really the weekend was an excuse to hang out at home. my cupboards have never been so stocked, my apartment so clean, or my closets so straightened. my friend heidi is in town (poor girl picked the wrong weekend to visit ny!) and i am so, so grateful to have had her company all weekend long. we passed the time with movies, books, and endless conversation.

a handful of cafes opened on sunday afternoon and we were thrilled to venture out for coffee and a walk. it was chilly enough for a sweater (hello, fall!) and the passing clouds ushered in the most glorious sunset, though we had not seen the sun in days. it was like nothing had ever happened.

a postcard

full of zinnias. and other things.

i am excited to stay home all weekend and watch it rain. i am not excited for the prospect of danger. but we'll cross that bridge tomorrow. or sunday.

i am marveling at my zinnias. such resilient little souvenirs of last weekend, they are.

i am grateful for a dad that calls three times in 12 hours to discuss just how prepared for natural disasters i am.

i am pondering grocery lists, bucket lists, red lipstick, and just what exactly i would do if dad's worstcasescenario comes true and the city shuts down for three days.

i am wishing you a happy, fun, safe weekend!

that time we went all the way to brooklyn just to smell perfume.

there is a parfumerie in williamsburg that bottles memories. instead of smelling like things, their perfumes are inspired by places and experiences, and have names like winter 1972, in the library,
memory of kindness, and at the beach 1966 (my favorite). one was even inspired by the passage in a room with a view where george kisses lucy in a field of violets.

isn't nice to know that a place like this exists?

miss elizabeth comes to breakfast.

somewhere between honey and cloudberry jam, there is dandelion jelly. with a jar of
it now to my name, there needed to be breakfast. there was coffee, there were croissants,
there was a friend named elizabeth that came bearing 40's jazz and may even have done
a twirl there at the end.

$2 zinnia bouquets at the farmer's market = i am ruined.

in the end, i came home with zinnias, peaches, and dandelion jelly. dandelion
jelly! i'd never heard of such, but if that doesn't just sound like summertime...
