a postcard

from me, to you.

it's friday, my family is here, and i am a happy girl. we are planning on eating, wandering, and
eating some more, and i am working on convincing dad to go to tea at alice's in honor of the
royal wedding. we'll see...

what are your weekend plans?

puddle-wonderful.

puddles and thunderstorms abound these days, but you won't hear a peep out of me. i love a big puddle, a 3 am thunderstorm, and the pretty blooms that the rains bring.

poptarts.

i've been eyeing this recipe for homemade poptarts for weeks now, but just got around to making it this weekend. when i was growing up, poptarts were somewhat of a delicacy around our house, so i have been intimidated by the thought of making them myself. i mean, homemade poptarts? is that even allowed?

it took some coaxing, but make them i did, and it has taken me four days to find the words to express just how good these are. i had everything i needed on hand and the only real trick was finding the counter space to assemble them (i eventually had to move my operation over to the kitchen table).

i'm planning to break out this recipe when anyone comes to visit, on lazy weekend mornings, any time
i need cheering up, and when i have children of my own some day. they needn't ever meet the boxed kind.

26 April 2011

on my doorstep.

just when i thought my first easter without a chocolate bunny had come and gone, my cute parents had rummaged through my closet, dug out my easter basket, and mailed it all the way to new york with a chocolate bunny inside.

25 April 2011

the weekend.

hiding out from the rain in chelsea market, french toast at pastis, open windows even when it was raining, and a new sugar bowl to be excited over.

and i didn't get to dye eggs or eat a chocolate bunny on easter, but i did get to attend a pretty service at a gorgeous cathedral uptown and steal away to the park during the one sunny spot of the whole weekend. it wasn't a holiday with my family, but hardly anything in the world compares with that. i'll take it.

22 April 2011

a postcard

from my friday to yours.

no work today and no real plans, either. maybe i will experiment with new recipes, maybe i will meet friends for dinner, maybe i will go see water for elephants. maybe i won't do any of those things and will just curl up and watch movies all day long. after all, it's nearly one o'clock and i haven't made a move yet. the possibilities are endless, really.

happy weekend!

21 April 2011

apartment story.

last week i read an article about the history of the apartment in new york and it's had me thinking about what it means to live here.

as it is anywhere, making a home here has been very much a ritual. the unpacking of the boxes, the hanging of the pictures, the scouting of the neighborhood coffeehouse. but it's more than that. my sense of space has been redefined since moving into a studio and i don't need near as much as i thought.
choosing an apartment was to choose a neighborhood and a particular corner of the city to experience each day. and there are the neighbors: the woman just below me hardly ever shuts her door and sometimes offers my friends cookies when they come to visit, the little boy downstairs is on broadway, and the lady on the first floor sings "row, row, row your boat" to her baby in the mornings.

the tiny space, the people i share it with...it's all part of the story.

20 April 2011

sunday in the park.

picnics and bike rides and sailboats and artists. the blossoms are peaking, too.

it's when the city and everybody in it comes out to play.

19 April 2011

the flower district.

along one city block, all in a row, are the shops that make up the flower district. from mauve roses to button mums to palm trees, whatever you can dream up, you will find.

as for me, i came home with daisies.

18 April 2011

the weekend.

it began like winter and ended like spring. and in between, there was an early venture down to the flower district followed by a nap that spanned an entire afternoon, brunch and dinner with friends, a visit to the rooms with a view exhibit at the met, and a whole lot of reading.

 so restful, so rejuvenating.
